Board game design

  • Design a card/board game that captures the excitement and strategy of MotoGP racing. The objective of this project is to design a MotoGP card game that captures the excitement and strategy of MotoGP racing. The card game should be easy to learn but challenging to master, and it should be suitable for players of all ages and skill levels.

  • The target audience for this card game is MotoGP fans of all ages and skill levels who are looking for a fun and engaging way to experience the excitement and strategy of MotoGP racing.

  • The final deliverables should include a set of digital files that can be used to produce physical cards/boards etc and any other materials required for the game. Additionally, a visual presentation or video explaining the game's mechanics, rules, and objectives may be required.

Project Brief

First prototype User testing

I tested my board game with multiple users using a simple paper prototype. Through these tests, I received valuable feedback that helped me improve the gameplay, making it more engaging and enjoyable.

Qualifying cards

Qualifying cards determine the starting positions of players before the race begins. Each card is randomly selected by a player and represents a specific qualifying time. The player with the fastest qualifying time gains the pole position, while those with slower times start further back on the grid. These cards ensure fairness and variability in starting positions, adding an element of unpredictability to the race.

Player team cards

Player cards in the game represent individual racers, each with a unique superpower that grants strategic advantages. These cards feature the racer's team name, their logo, and a brief description of their ability. Superpowers can be used once per lap to gain an edge in the race. With lap counters to track progress, player cards add depth and personalization to gameplay, enhancing the immersive experience of motorcycle racing competition.

Action cards

Aligns with the strategic skill of overtaking opponents, a common and essential aspect of MotoGP races

Represents the consequence of an actual crash on the track, where not only the involved rider but also those behind may be affected.

Aligns with the unpredictability of technical issues and potential crashes, which can force a rider to miss a turn.

Reflects the challenges of racing in adverse weather conditions, where reduced visibility and slippery tracks impact performance.

Reflects the MotoGP Stop and Go Penalty Rule, requiring riders to make a stop in the pit lane as a punishment for certain infractions.

Aligns with the MotoGP Long Lap Penalty Rule, where riders must take a longer route as a penalty for rule infringements.

Aligns with the concept of riders strategically using bursts of speed, perhaps similar to deploying a power boost.

Reflects the strategic aspect of influencing the position of another rider on the track.

Represents the unpredictable nature of racing, where unexpected events or decisions can influence the outcome.

Resonates with the concept of yellow flags in MotoGP races, indicating caution due to an incident on the track.

Resonates with the scenario where a race may be stopped due to significant issues or dangers on the track, requiring riders to reassess and potentially restart.
